For our day off, we took a fabulous 6 hour canal tour meandering along at 4 MPH. There are over 2,000 miles of canals in England. They were originally built in the 1800's to transport goods from the ocean inland. Today they are used for recreation and leisure. The path that the horses used to pull the barges now make great walking and jogging paths.

We have met people who sold their home when they retired and live on their boat. Others have a canal boat and a home and split the time between.
We took our lunches and just pulled over, moored, and ate and walked for a bit of a stretch.
There are many locks on the canal. We talked to a
couple who started in Cambridge the last of March
and were making their way to Northern Wales.
They had spent the morning working their way through
the 21 locks the beginning of which you see here.
